Sewall was the stepson of Charles Calvert, and part of colonial Maryland's Catholic ruling elite. A Phase III was undertaken by the Navy for a planned project, but the site turned out to be so rich and significant they ended up preserving the site instead. Still, the Phase III revealed evidence of the original 1675 post-in-ground main house, a late 1690s replacement home with a brick foundation, and a huge borrow pit in between full of construction debris from the 1690s house, trash, and demolition debris from the c. 1675 house. This feature has a nice tight date of c. 1675-1700. A little over 20% of the feature was excavated yielding amazing artifacts, such as a pipe clay figurine of a king, lots of large North Devon Gravel tempered vessel fragments, a bodkin with the initials ""SS"" inscribed (for Susanna Sewall, Nicholas' wife), wine bottles and bottle seals, dated window leads, etc. ","Midden_Sheet,Post_Hole,Trash_Pit_Dump,other","Borrow,pit",Yes_Processed,//apps.jefpat.maryland.gov/diagnostic/SmallFinds/Site%20Summaries/18ST704%20Charles%20Gift%20Site%20Summary.htm,69,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Historic St. Mary's City Archaeological Collection,Historic St. Mary's City,18ST1,,MD,Dr. J.H. The assemblage represents the dwelling of John Halfhead, a 17th-century Chesapeake brickmaker, and his family. The Halfhead ca. 1650-1685 occupation yielded a tiled floor from the house and a trash pit feature in the yard. The Phase II only tested features, but the assemblage is rich in artifacts, such as a tubular shell bead, both locally made and imported tobacco pipes, ceramics, and other small finds. The brick shows evidence of local manufacture and use of lower quality products, as if Halfhead used seconds from his industry in his own home. The site is notable for its proximity to Mattapany (18ST390), a brick structure built ca. 1667 for Governor Charles Calvert. Halfhead may be the reason Mattapany and other sites on the peninsula had access to brickwork. The site also has a 19th-century component associated with the Carroll family of Susquehanna plantation.","Pit,other",Tiled floor,Yes_Processed,//apps.jefpat.maryland.gov/diagnostic/SmallFinds/Site%20Summaries/18ST751%20Rousby%20Site%20Summary.htm,8,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, NAVAIR,Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory,18ST642,2008.005.002,MD,Sara Rivers Cofield,sara.rivers-cofield@maryland.gov,410-586-8589,"2nd_18th_cen,1st_19th_cen",African_American,,"Domestic,Subsist_agri",,No,1993-1995,Yes,Yes,Yes,Yes,"Watts, Gordon P., and Raymond Tubby 1998 Phase III Archaeological Investigation of the NAVAIR Site 18ST642, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland. The collection is cataloged in an Excel sheet, but not entered into the Burke Museum Archaeology Department's database. There are roughly 100 oversized objects (large pieces of metal, stove fragments, wagon fragments, door fragments, sheet metal, saws, buckets, pipes). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, WA State was a leading lumber producer and many sawmills could be found in the Seattle area. These sawmills attracted Japanese men looking for a source of employment. While the first Japanese who arrived in the 1880s in Port Blakely were single males employed as millworkers, by the early 1900s the Japanese community of Yama/Nagaya was built and included families. Abandoned in the 1920s, the community is critical in understanding the labor experiences and the development and emergence of Japanese American culture in the Pacific Northwest. The Old Skykomish Townsite was first established around 1890 as a railroad construction camp and after that a refueling and maintenance facility for BNSF. After 1900, the Skykomish Lumber Company was a major employer. Mining also provided some local jobs. Between the 1890s and 1910, railroad workers included Japanese, German, Hungarian, Polish, and Filipino workers. The 1910 Census for the Lumber company listed workers of Japanese, Greek and Hindi descent. After 1910, more workers came from Sweden, Holland, Denmark, Canada and WA State. Most of the archaeological features were located within a two-block area that was part of the original town plat of Skykomish. The lack of many identifiable ethnic artifacts in the assemblage potentially reflects the less diverse population living within town limits. There are some large oversize artifacts: pool table leg, misery whip saw, stove parts.","Cellar_Hole,Midden_Sheet,Pit,Privy,Trash_Pit_Dump",,No_Unprocessed,,68 cubic feet,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
